There are four factors that determine the value of a diamond, collectively known as the 4Cs. The combination of the 4Cs determines each diamond's value. Master these important facts and you are prepared to make your purchase.

Factor	What It Means	Why It Matters
Cut	How well the diamond's facets interact with light	The cut determines a diamond's brilliance and sparkle — the most important factor to the eye.
Color	The absence of color in a white diamond	Colorless diamonds are rarer and more valuable; slight tints can be graded and priced accordingly.
Clarity	The presence of internal inclusions or surface blemishes	Fewer inclusions mean a rarer, more valuable diamond. Many are invisible to the naked eye.
Carat	The weight of the diamond	Larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable, but cut quality can make a smaller stone sparkle more.
